Catholic Tidbit: The Meaning of "Amen"
The word "Amen" is one of the most frequently used words in Catholic prayers, hymns, and the Mass. But what does it actually mean?
"Amen" comes from Hebrew and means "so be it" or "truly". When we say "Amen" at the end of a prayer, we are affirming our belief in what has been said and expressing trust in God.
Interestingly, Jesus often used "Amen, Amen, I say to you" in the Gospels to emphasize the truth of His teachings (e.g., John 6:47). In the Mass, our final "Amen"—especially at the Doxology ("Through Him, with Him, and in Him…")—is known as the "Great Amen", signifying our full assent to the Eucharistic Prayer.
