The First Indian Canonized Martyr
1. Birth and Early Life (1556–1564)
- Born in 1556 in Agashi, a village in Bassein (now Vasai, Maharashtra, India).
- His father was a Portuguese soldier, and his mother was a native Indian from Bassein.
- Lost his mother at a young age.
- Placed under the care of Jesuit priests at the Agashi orphanage.
2. Education and Life in Bassein Fort (1564–1572)
- Due to attacks by Arab pirates, Jesuits moved the orphanage to Bassein Fort for safety.
- Lived in the Jesuit headquarters at the Church of the Holy Name (now St. Gonzalo Garcia Church).
- Fr. Sebastian Gonzalves, a Jesuit priest, took care of him for eight years.
- Showed religious zeal and was trained in Christian teachings.
3. Missionary Work in Japan (1572–1580)
- At age 16, traveled to Japan with Fr. Sebastian Gonzalves to assist in Jesuit missions.
- Served as a catechist (religious teacher) for 8 years in Japan.
- Tried multiple times to join the Jesuit Order, but was rejected for unknown reasons.
4. Merchant Life in Japan (1580–1592)
- Left the Jesuits and started a successful business in Alacao, Japan.
- Gained fluency in Japanese and formed close ties with high-ranking officials.
- Traveled to Macau and the Philippines for trade.
- Met a Franciscan friar, Br. John, in the Philippines, who rekindled his religious passion.
5. Joining the Franciscan Order (1592–1596)
- On May 26, 1592, joined the Franciscan Order in Manila, Philippines.
- Due to his fluency in Japanese, he was sent as a translator to Japan along with Fr. Peter Baptista.
- Engaged in missionary work and spread Christianity in Japan.
- The Buddhist priests saw the success of Christian missions as a threat and spread rumors.
6. Arrest and Persecution (1596–1597)
- On December 8, 1596, arrested in Kyoto under the orders of Japanese ruler Hideyoshi Toyotomi.
- Forced to walk 1000 miles for two months through harsh winter conditions towards Nagasaki.
- Suffered torture and humiliation to discourage Japanese people from embracing Christianity.
7. Martyrdom (February 5, 1597)
- On February 5, 1597, crucified on Nagasaki Hill along with 25 others.
- The 26 martyrs included:
- 4 Spanish Franciscans
- 1 Mexican Franciscan
- 1 Indian Franciscan – St. Gonzalo Garcia 🇮🇳
- 3 Japanese Jesuits
- 17 Japanese Christian laymen (including 3 young boys)
- All sang the hymn "Te Deum" in thanksgiving before being pierced with spears.
8. Canonization and Legacy
- Beatified by Pope Urban VIII on September 14, 1627.
- Canonized by Pope Pius IX on June 8, 1862.
- The bones of the 26 Martyrs are enshrined in St. Paul’s Cathedral (now a museum) in Macau, China.
- St. Gonzalo Garcia Church in Vasai, Maharashtra, stands in his honor.
- Celebrated as the Patron Saint of Vasai and honored on February 5 every year.
