Catholic Tidbit: The Fastest Canonization in History
The record for the fastest canonization in the Catholic Church belongs to St. Peter of Verona (St. Peter Martyr).
He was a 13th-century Dominican friar and preacher who was assassinated for his faith in 1252. Miracles were reported almost immediately after his death, and less than a year later, on March 9, 1253, Pope Innocent IV officially canonized him—just 11 months after his martyrdom!
While St. Anthony of Padua’s canonization (in 1232) was also very fast, St. Peter of Verona holds the record by just a few weeks. His feast day is celebrated on April 29.
St. Peter of Verona, pray for us!
